“We can look out into our classroom and think that everyone is having a perfectly fine day, but it’s absolutely not true.”

Katelyn Cooper said this, and she would know. Cooper leads the Cooper Biology Education Research Lab at Arizona State University. Her team recently conducted a survey of 2,175 undergraduates who were taking online science classes. The results, published in PLOS ONE in June, showed that a staggering 54% of the students reported experiencing symptoms of depression.

Dr. Jennifer Landin is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University. She teaches large-enrollment courses in biology, as well as interdisciplinary courses that incorporate humanities into the sciences to encourage a more holistic understanding of traditional and scientific knowledge and appreciation of nature through visual arts. Biological Illustration, a biology course created by Landin, has garnered international attention with its creative approach to teaching science.

I am a cancer-biologist by training and my lab studies the expression patterns and biochemical function of group of genes that are aberrantly expressed in many cancers. Our future goals, in addition to cancer research, is to identify equitable practices in STEM research labs and explore the role of wrap-around mentoring in retention of marginalized groups in STEM. I am an immigrant woman of color who struggles with anxiety. I am a slow runner and use running to sort my mental well-being.

Leah Gerber is a professor of conservation science in the School of Life Sciences and founding director of the Center for Biodiversity Outcomes at Arizona State University. Gerber’s research, teaching, and leadership advance the integration of science in decision processes to achieve sustainable biodiversity outcomes.

Karin Ellison's research, teaching and program development activities span the areas of research ethics, ethics education development and the history of American science and technology. As director of the Life Science Ethics Program within the School of Life Sciences, she coordinates opportunities for students, faculty and staff to learn about and reflect on the ethical dimensions of advances in the life sciences and life science research.

Kristen Parrish opened last week's Natural Sciences Inclusion Summit 2022 with words that set the stage for the daylong event.
